Chapter

Sixteen

Ford

“Chelsea.” My voice croaks. My head empties and all the air feels sucked out of the condo.

The door swings behind Chelsea with a soft click. Silence expands in the room.

She stares at us, her mouth open, eyes as big as my bike tires, her hand pressed to her chest.

Griff moves first. “Chelsea. Love.” He strides toward her.

She throws up a hand. “Stop.”

He stops.

She turns her head slowly from side to side. Her chest rises and falls quickly, delicately, with her breath.

Okay, none of us knows what to say.

“I knew there was something,” she says slowly, her voice so low I almost can’t hear it. “I felt it.” She swallows. “You two weren’t just friends, were you? You were lovers.”

Griff shifts his body so he can look at me, then back to Chelsea. “Yes.”

“It was a long time ago,” I add, taking a couple of steps closer.

Griff nods.

Her still-big eyes dart back and forth between Griff and me. “You were just kissing. Two minutes ago. That’s not a long time ago.”

I grit my teeth. Shit. We could have been completely honest with her and told her things were over between Griff and me a long time ago. But she walked in on us kissing.

Which meant nothing. I tell her that. “That didn’t mean anything.”

Griff turns to me with a raised eyebrow, and I shoot him an icy glare. “Right, Griff?”

“It was a mistake,” he says. “I’m sorry you saw that.”

I can see Chelsea’s struggling to find words. “Wow. I did not expect this.”

“I know.” I keep my voice low and gentle.

Her face takes on a frozen look as she focuses on me. “How could you do that?”

“Chelsea. I—”

“Never mind. I’ll leave you two to it.” She hustles past us, down the hall, and into her bedroom.

“Chelsea, wait,” Griff calls to her.

I open my mouth, but don’t bother saying anything as her bedroom door smacks shut.

Griff turns to me and drops his head back, eyes closed.

“Well, we fucked that up, didn’t we?” I say.

“Oh yeah. Absobloodylutely. Christ.”

I want to lash out and blame him for it, but the truth is, I was all in on that kiss. He was right—it was a mistake. But in the moment, it was…incredible. “You should leave,” I grunt. “I’ll talk to her when she’s settled down.”

“What are you going to talk to her about?” Griff fixes his gaze on me.

“I’ll apologize. I’ll tell her that…” I clear my throat. “You care about her and what was between us was in the past. What just happened was a mistake and she should talk to you about it, too.”

His rigid features relax, and he studies me for a long moment. “You’re still an honorable man, Ford.”

My chest burns. I say nothing.

Griff nods. “Okay. If I don’t hear from her, I’ll try calling her tonight.”

I nod and watch him walk out of the condo.

I lower my ass to the couch and bury my face in my hands. I’m not sure how I’m going to talk to Chelsea and convince her that everything is fine when I can’t figure out what the hell just happened myself.
